Be Better at Hospitality #075

This week, we are talking about getting better at hospitality. This is a tough issue for so many women. We worry about our homes or our cooking skills or our children not being "good enough" for company. We stress about how to be the perfect hostess. But hospitality is such a gift to ourselves, to others, and to our communities, that we all should make a little effort to get better at doing it.

How to Handle Criticism

This week, we are talking about ways to handle criticism, which is a tough topic because nobody likes to be criticized. When we receive negative feedback, our immediate reaction is often to reject the criticism or brood over it and get angry. In this episode, I give tips to help you handle it productively, instead. Change Just One Habit #070

NOTES

This week, we are talking about the power of habits. I am inspired by a recent book I am listening to, The Power of Habit: Why we Do What We Do in Life and Business. I want to encourage you to change one negative habit into a positive one in your life. We discuss some ideas for ways to challenge ourselves to do better in one these categories:

1) Health and Wellness

2) Relationships

3) Work

4) Spiritual Life

And then we discuss some ways to increase our chances of succeeding in changing our habits. These include:

1) Hold ourselves accountable.

Find a way to include others in your new habit so you will feel pressure to continue.

2) Set a time limit on your personal challenge.

Especially when we feel it is hard and overwhelming, setting a time limit on the challenge can encourage us to keep it up until it gets just a little bit easier.

3) Use the word "BUT" to control negative thoughts.

Allow yourself to be negative if you must, but don't stay there. Add the word BUT to the end of your negative thought and turn it into a focus on the positive.

4) Get rid of temptations and distractions.

Make your new habit, by default, the "easiest" thing to do. Make breaking your new habit very inconvenient.

5) Track your progress.

Whether it's keeping a journal or crossing days off the calendar, having a tangible way to see your progress will encourage you to continue.

Do You Love Yourself? #069

This week we are taking on a topic near and dear to my heart. Do you love yourself? In my work and ministry, I am all about teaching women to know their worth so they can find their joy, but how exactly do we do that?

Our secular culture tells us to find our worth in our physical selves, in our beauty, our accomplishments, and our possessions. But all of these things leave us empty and disillusioned. we are built for a relationship with God, and only in the context of that relationship will be find peace and lasting joy.

We also talk about what true humility is and how what kinds of things can become distractions from the kind of "holiness" and "personal achievement" God calls us to.

Finally, I take a reader question about "cry room wars" at Mass and discuss ways in which I find Colleen Duggan's recent post helpful. Also helpful was a reminder I heard from a Benedictine monk in a recent homily about Chapter 72 of the Rule of St. Benedict. How much happier and holier would we all be of we approached others in love and with mercy! Let me know your thoughts on these topics. I love hearing from you!

When You're Just Too Tired #068

Speaking of tired, I recorded this podcast from two different airports with a pretty terrible microphone. It was the only way I was going to get the podcast done this week, but I apologize for the audio quality. Or lack thereof. ;)

In this week's show, we are sharing ideas for ways to cope with life when you are JUST TOO TIRED to cope. We all have days when we are extra busy, stressed, sleep-deprived, etc. and we need some basic ways to get through them with grace. Some of the ideas I share:

1) Cross some things off your list.
It might be chores, household upkeep, carpool, errands, complicated dinner menus … whatever it is, make your life easier by taking some obligations off your plate. Everyone will survive. I promise.

2) Ask for help.
We don't like to ask for help. Our pride gets in the way. But sometimes, to get through an especially tiring time, we need to ask others to pitch in. Give them the grace of the opportunity to be generous with you!

3) Make sleep a priority.
This sounds like a no-brainer, but how often do we resist or avoid rest, even when we are very tired? No Netflix, no Facebook. Get yourself to bed early tonight!

4) Watch your diet.
Sugar and caffeine are texting when you are sleepy, but they will sabotage your sleep at night, making you're recovery take much longer. Preserve your sleep by avoiding "easy drugs" to wake yourself up. Your body will thank you and recover more quickly from the Crazy Tired.

We also share some feedback from David N. in response to Andrea's difficulties wth her mother-in-law we shared on the show last week. Calling on all men to admit you are listening to Girlfriends! Thank you, David!

In this week's show, we are sharing ideas for ways to celebrate all 50 days of Easter this year. Some of the ideas I discuss are:

1) Take some Lenten practice into Easter.
2) Set a 50 day goal.
3) Set a new tradition for Sundays.
4) Spread out the "Easter fun" in forms of crafts, recipes, and activities.

Real Life Tips From a Work-at-Home Mom #066

This week, I am sharing some of the ideas that make my life easier and more enjoyable as a work-at-home mom. These are not truly "productivity" tips, as I am not expert in those things, but they are some things that help me to be more efficient and happy throughout my days. Here is the list we discuss:

1) Use your email as a to-do-list.
2) Get a "walking desk" to keep you moving even when you're busy at work.
3) Use wireless earbuds or a head set for phone calls.
4) Set up some built-in rewards for yourself as you accomplish tasks throughout your day.
5) Work out in the morning if you possibly can.
6) Vary your jobs between work tasks/home tasks, physical tasks/mental tasks as you go.
7) Use even small pockets of tie in creative, productive ways..

I also share feedback on marriage advice from Vanessa and answer a reader question about how to get kids to have at Mass.

The Truth About Teens #064

This week, we are talking about parenting teens, and sharing some ideas for ways to get through the unique challenges associated with parenting this age group. There seems to be a dearth of information out there in Catholic circles, mostly because parents want to respect the privacy of their own teenagers, but I worry that the silence leaves some struggling moms and dads (and teens!) feeling like they are all alone. You are not alone! The main points I share for getting through the teen years are these:

1) See the big picture.
Much as we need the reminder when they are trying toddlers, we need it all the more so when they are teens: This will not last forever. They will grow up. They will change. They will mature. Today is not forever. Frustrating moments may feel never-ending, but the truth is that every stage of he journey toward adulthood is a temporary one. Keep trying your best and keep your eyes on the prize!

2) Remember your own teen years.
While this may cause some anxiety (because we know ALL TOO WELL the trouble we got in as teens!), it can also help you shift your perspective and become more compassionate toward your teen when they are having a tough time. Remember the dumb things that mattered SO much to you way back then? It felt real, didn't it? Understand that that is your teen's limited perspective now. They will outgrow it, but this is a normal stage for them to be in, and they are truly sometimes suffering in the moment.

3) Don’t take it personally.
This is hard to remember, but it truly is not about you. It’s about hormones, it’s about confusion, it's about drama at school, it’s about sports team problems. you;re teens are not acting out as a rejection of you and all you have done for them and all you hold dear. They are acting out because that is physically and emotionally a part of this stage of growth. Sometimes, too, our teens push our limits and test us because they know they CAN. It is a privilege to be that "safe" and steadfast relationship for them.

4) Remember who they are.
That sweet 7-year-old boy is in there somewhere, beneath the layers of sullenness and eye rolls. That generous 5-year-old girl is in there, beneath the Goth make up and earbuds. Your job is to see that person you knows well and love through to the other side of these tumultuous years. Remind them who they are. Call them to be their better selves. Whether they let on or not, they are listening!

5) Change your attitude.
The teen years are actually pretty awesome. Big kids can be a bigger help around the house. They are people you can actually have a conversation with. They bring new ideas, new people, and new adventures into your home and family. It's a joy to watch your children grow into the people God wants them to be. Revel in their youthful energy and idealism!
